What Are AI Agents? A Plain-English Introduction

You've probably started hearing the term "AI agents" everywhere — but what actually are they, and how are they different from the chatbots we already use? This plain-English introduction breaks it down, no technical background required.

From chatbots to agents

A chatbot like ChatGPT responds to one request at a time: you ask, it answers. An AI agent goes further — it can take a goal, break it into steps, use tools, and carry out a multi-step task with less hand-holding. Instead of just answering "how do I do this?", an agent can actually work through "this" for you.

What makes something an "agent"

AI agents typically share a few traits: they can plan (break a goal into steps), use tools (search the web, run calculations, call other software), remember context across steps, and act toward a goal rather than just replying. Put simply, a chatbot talks; an agent does.

A simple example

Ask a chatbot "what's a good itinerary for Tokyo?" and it writes one. An agent, given the right tools, could check real flight prices, compare hotels, build the itinerary, and assemble a booking plan — chaining several steps together to complete the task.

Why agents matter for work

This is why agents are a big deal: they can automate complex, multi-step workflows — research, data processing, customer-support flows, routine operations. That's a step beyond using AI for single tasks, and it's where a lot of business value is heading.

What to keep in mind

More autonomy means more need for oversight. Because agents take actions, mistakes can have bigger consequences than a wrong chatbot answer. Designing them carefully — with guardrails and human checkpoints — is essential, which is exactly why understanding agents is becoming a valuable skill.
