AI is a powerful tool, but using it responsibly means understanding its risks. Whether you're drafting emails or analyzing data, a basic grasp of AI ethics protects you, your organization, and the people your work affects. Here's what every professional should know.
Accuracy and hallucinations
AI can produce confident, convincing information that's simply wrong. Relying on it without checking can lead to bad decisions, misinformation, or embarrassing errors. The rule: verify anything important before you act on it.
Privacy and confidential data
Anything you paste into a public AI tool may be processed on external servers. Never enter confidential, personal, or sensitive company information into tools that aren't approved for it. When in doubt, leave it out.
Bias and fairness
AI learns from human-created data, which means it can reflect and even amplify human biases. Be especially cautious when AI influences decisions about people — hiring, evaluations, lending — and review outputs critically rather than treating them as neutral.
