Everyone's using generative AI, but few people can explain what's happening under the hood. You don't need a computer science degree to understand the basics — and understanding them makes you a smarter, safer user. Here's how generative AI works, in plain English.
It predicts, it doesn't "know"
At its core, a generative AI model like ChatGPT is a very sophisticated prediction engine. Given some text, it predicts the most likely next word, then the next, and so on. It's not looking up facts in a database or "understanding" the way humans do — it's generating language that statistically fits the pattern of what came before.
Trained on enormous amounts of text
These models — called large language models, or LLMs — learn by processing vast quantities of text. From all that data, they pick up the patterns of language: grammar, style, common facts, and how ideas tend to connect. That's why they can write fluently on almost any topic.
Why it sounds so human
Because the model has absorbed so many examples of human writing, its output sounds natural and confident. But fluency isn't the same as accuracy — which is exactly why it can produce convincing nonsense.
Why it makes mistakes
Since the model predicts likely text rather than retrieving verified facts, it can "hallucinate" — generating plausible but false information. It also has no real-time awareness unless connected to live data, and its knowledge has a cutoff date. Understanding this is the key to using it wisely.
